I This timeline shows Alan Bates's work in every medium, chronologically, so that we can study the flow among theatre, film and television, with a pleasant accumulation of radio and other audio projects. Alan knew he wanted to be an actor from boyhood, when he appeared as Mercutio's page in a Derby Shakespeare Theatre production of Romeo and Juliet. Of his work, he said: "You keep trying to push your range ... I like to go as wide as it will go." One year out of RADA, he performed in a benchmark play of the 50's, John Osborne's Look Back in Anger; two years later, he was making his first film -- the classic The Entertainer.
