"I have not
done as much Shakespeare as I should have done. But I have done
a few more than people know about.
When I was in my
teens I did a Romeo straight out of RADA in a semi professional
production and I really enjoyed that.
Before you know
too much you can sometimes give the odd performance that is quite
something. I really went for Romeo and felt at the time I'd really
hit the part straight off."
-Alan Bates

This timeline shows Alan Bates's work in
every medium, chronologically, so that we can study the flow
among theatre, film and television, with a pleasant accumulation
of radio and other audio projects.
Alan knew he wanted
to be an actor from boyhood, when he appeared as Mercutio's page
in a Derby Shakespeare Theatre production of Romeo and Juliet.
Of his work, he said: "You keep trying to push your range
... I like to go as wide as it will go." One year out of
RADA, he performed in a benchmark play of the 50's, John Osborne's
Look Back in Anger; two years later, he was making his
first film -- the classic The Entertainer. Each of Bates's
following roles on stage and in film is significant -- by the
end of the 60's, he had established himself as one of the finest
actors of our time.
